Alex Williams

Founder and main song-writer, Alex is the sole lyricist and longest existing member of the band. After several lineup changes, Alex managed to bring together a group of dedicated and talented musicians to form the current New Old World. He is the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist of the band however plays a range of other instruments also.

Influenced by the likes of Morrissey and Guy Garvey, Alex writes lyrics which aim to tell stories of tragedy and beauty in the coldness of mundane modern life. Being a multi-instrumentalist allows for Alex to compose and arrange for the full band, before individually each member contributes their own musical influence. Alex is a flexible musician, capable of playing multiple folk instruments such as bouzouki, harmonica, banjo and mandolin and this has great baring on the overall final sound produced. Alex composes songs which genre wise are perhaps difficult to catergorise as they draw on aspects from folk, indie, blues and even orchestral styles of music, which when brought together with his story-telling and at times darkly humorous lyrics, form the recognisably distinctive sound of New Old World.

Alex has played at numerous venues and festivals including a performance at the famed Leas Cliff Hall and a live performance and interview on BBC Radio also. In 2014 and 2015 he performed a set to a couple of thousand people on a Glastonbury Stage in Rochester Castle Gardens and along with the rest of New Old World, will be playing City Sound Project later this year.
